Tips to Minimize the Strain on your HVAC System During the Summer

minimize the strain on your HVAC system during the summer

As with all things, the more your AC is used, the more likely it is to wear out sooner and have issues.

We really put our air conditioners to the test throughout the Western New York summer months and into early fall. To keep the heat and humidity at bay inside our homes, we turn to our AC for relief. As with all things, the more your AC is used, the more likely it is to wear out sooner and have issues. We are going to review some tips to minimize the strain on your HVAC system during the summer and warmer months of the year, so you can prolong its lifespan.

Tips to Minimize the Strain on your HVAC System During the Summer

HVAC systems are one thing that most people don’t want to think about ever having to replace, but with time, it usually becomes pretty inevitable. There are some things you can do to minimize the strain on your HVAC system during the summer and throughout the year, so you can put off having to replace it, a little bit longer.

Regularly Change Your Air Filters

We have said this over and over again, and that’s because it is so important. One of the easiest ways to minimize the strain on your HVAC system during the summer is to check and change your air filters on a regular basis. We recommend changing your air filters at least once a month, especially in the summer, to maximize airflow. There is no exact number of days in which you should change your filter, as each home is different and it depends on the strain you put on your filter, what particles are in the air, and also what type of filter you have.

Keep Your AC at the Recommended Temperature Setting

Summer is one of the best times to utilize your programmable thermostat and change the settings for your home’s temperature throughout the day and night to limit the strain you are putting on your AC. During the warmer months, the U.S. Department of Energy recommends setting your thermostat to 78°F (26°C) when you are home. If you still find yourself looking for relief, you can invest in a dehumidifier to keep cool air in your home and help remove humidity. You may think that 78°F sounds uncomfortably high; however, this is the ideal temperature to help your air conditioner provide better cooling for less energy.

Lower the Heat in Your Home

Another way to minimize the strain on your HVAC system during the summer, is to keep your home as cool as possible, naturally. While most people like to allow sunshine in their homes, while we have it in Western New York, having your blinds and curtains open can actually heat up your home. Save as many heat producing tasks, as possible, for later in the day when it is cooler outside (baking, showering, washing laundry, etc.). Try to grill whenever possible, to not add cooking heat inside your home.

Routine Maintenance

Because the summer is already well underway, you have likely already had an AC tune-up, but regular maintenance and checks on your HVAC system by a Western New York AC professional, is one of the best ways to keep your HVAC system in good condition. Preventive care will help diagnose problems and issues with your HVAC system before they become a major problem. If there are any signs of a problem with your air conditioner, you should contact an air conditioner repair expert right away to help resolve the issue before you end up needing AC replacement.

To ensure you have efficient and effective cool air in your home throughout the warmer months of the year, you need to minimize the strain on your HVAC system during the summer, as much as possible. While we have reviewed some tips, there are other things you can do, like: turn the AC down or off when you are having a party and people are going in and out, add a fan to extra warm areas of your home, etc.
