Why is There no Cold Water Coming out of the Shower?

No Cold Water Coming out of the Shower

We all know that having no hot water can be a bad thing, but it can be just a miserable to find your home with no cold water.

Picture this. After spending a warm Western New York summer afternoon outdoors, you go inside to take a shower to cool down. You turn on the water with anticipation of hopping in, and there is only hot water coming out. No matter what temperature you turn the faucet to, you can’t seem to get it to cool down. Now you are wondering, “Why is there no cold water coming out of the shower”?

We all know that having no hot water can be a bad thing, but it can be just a miserable to find your home with no cold water. What causes this? How can you find yourself getting relief from the heat under the cool water again?

Why is There no Cold Water Coming out of the Shower?

Before you can resolve the issue of no cold water coming out of the shower, you need to determine what is causing the problem.

Try Troubleshooting.

To start, you should check the other faucets around your home to see if they are having the same problem. Determine whether the issue is only in one shower or your entire house. If the other faucets only have warm water, then the shutoff valve in the main water supply line was likely turned off, preventing the cold water from coming in. If the problem is limited to just the one shower, you likely have a defective pressure balancing valve within your shower faucet.

Fixing the Issue.

Once you have determined why there is no cold water coming out of the shower, we recommend contacting a Hamburg plumbing professional to confirm the cause of the problem and resolve the issue. If the issue is with the shutoff valve being off, you can likely easily turn the valve back on on your own and take a cool shower; however, if the issue is with the pressure balancing valve, or something else, it may require quite a bit more work to resolve.

What Causes a Pressure Balancing Valve to Malfunction?

The pressure balancing valve is a valve, typically located in the faucet of the shower, which regulates the pressure and ratio of cold and hot water coming from the showerhead. Basically, it works to mix the water from the hot water and cold water lines to create the water temperature you want for your shower.

Like all things, this shower component can break down over time. If your shower isn’t used on a regular basis (think a guest bathroom) or if the water quality is low, there is a higher probability for mineral buildup or corrosion in the cartridge holding the pressure balancing valve. This clog and deterioration may stop the cold water from reaching your showerhead.

Replacing a pressure balancing valve requires some effort and you basically need to disassemble your entire shower faucet to do so. This puts you at risk for causing larger issues, such as water spraying out everywhere.
